Just a quick post today to announce the winners of the six pairs of blue circle #LaceUp4Diabetes laces that Novo Nordisk was kind enough to provide for me to give away. Yay!
Over all, between Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Bitter~Sweet, there were 36 entries. I wish I had a pair for each and every one of you. But the six people I do have pairs for are . . . . . .
Humor me for a minute as we flash back to my college years. (Disclosure: This time period may involve any and all of the following: big hair, day-glo colors, large geometric prints, piles and piles of black rubber bracelets, and guy-liner long before it was known as such.) A young version of me is late for class and frantically tying my Keds when a lace snaps. In a hurry, I pull out both laces, throw them away and rush off the class. And I decide I like these new slip-on Keds I’ve created. And since then, each time I buy a new pair of Keds, the first thing I do is take out the laces. I used to throw them away, but now they get hung on a hook to be used as K.C.’s cat toy of choice (She loves a good string to swat at and it keeps her away from my yarn.)
So why are we strolling down memory lane (in our lace-less Keds)? Because I now have a reason to put laces back in my sneakers, thanks to Novo Nordisk’s #LaceUp4Diabetes campaign and these lovely blue circle laces.
When these laces started popping up around the DOC a few years ago, I longed for a pair. And last year I was fortunate to score them from Scott Benner. And this year, I’m thrilled that Novo Nordisk has sent me the 6 pairs you see above to give away!
Why is this important to me? Well, because exercise motivation is probably the portion of diabetes management I struggle with the most. But when I actually do exercise, it’s so easy to see the benefits to my blood sugar, my mood and my energy level. And seeing the blue circle laces helps with motivation. They remind me of those health benefits, but more importantly they remind me of all my friends in the DOC who have a regular exercise regime that I admire. And although we aren’t actually exercising together, we kind of are in a virtual way. And that helps get me moving.
So, would you like a pair of these laces to help get you moving too? Simply leave me a comment and I’ll enter you into a random drawing. I’ve also been taking entries from Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, so I’ll gather them all together and pick six winners on Friday. Good luck!
I used to treat low blood sugars with juice all the time. I bought juice boxes marketed to toddlers because they had just enough carbs and I didn’t have to measure anything out while low. But then some (probably fake) disgusting“news” item was going around Facebook about juice boxes, and because I’m so easily grossed out I haven’t been able to drink a juice box since.
Pete likes juice so we always have a large bottle in the refrigerator. But determining how much of it I should drink while low is pretty impossible for me, so I don’t bother with it. Until now!! Because National Etchings sent me their measuring glass to try out. I. Am. In. Love.
Seriously, this is a beautiful glass all on it’s own. It’s shiny and pretty and feels nice and solid in my hand. The quality is so good that I’d expect it to be priced higher than it is. But the big draw for me is the measurements etched into the side. It means I can pour out three ounces of juice to treat, even when a low blood sugar has my brain pretty scrambled.
Want a new low glass for yourself? Well, you are in luck, because National Etchings has offered a second glass for me to raffle off! To enter, simply use the widget below to “Like” the National Etching Facebook page. The contest will close on Friday, October 31st. Good luck!!
I had so much fun reading the comments of how you all deal with those droplets of blood. Lots of lickers out there, and lots of wiping on clothes / meter cases / the same tissue over and over again. Hey, no judgments here - the important thing is that we are testing, so however we deal with the left over blood up to us.
Of course, the reason you are really here is to find out who won a chance to try Diabetic Dabs as a solution to those little droplets everywhere. So, as chosen by the Random Number Generator I always use for giveaways, the winners are . . . .
Congratulations, ladies, I will email you both to get your info so I can send your Dabs. Thanks to all who entered and to Diabetic Dabs for making this contest possible.
It’s happened to me time and time again, and I’m willing to bet it’s happened to most of you too. I test my blood sugar, like a good little PWD, and am rewarded for my efforts by finding a blood-inked fingerprint on my clothes / keyboard / phone / cat. (Okay, not really on my cat, but you get it, right?) It’s destructive and also pretty gross.
How does one contain those little droplets that get everywhere? For a while I stashed a tissue in my meter case, ripping off small pieces to wipe my fingertips after each test. Yes, it worked. But yes, I also started to find tiny messy tissue shards everywhere. So I was intrigued when an email from Diabetic Dabs landed in my inbox.
Diabetic Dabs are small pads of absorbent sheets to wipe up those little blood droplets. Here’s a bit of background from the company:
“Liz Sacco, the founder and inventor of Diabetic Dabs, is a mother to four boys, including David who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2011. While helping David with his blood glucose tests, Liz realized there was a constant struggle to find a clean and easy way for her son to wipe off the excess blood from his finger, and prevent him from wiping the blood on his pants. Two years later, Liz developed Diabetic Dabs.
Diabetic Dabs are non-toxic, highly absorbent sheets that are designed to fit conveniently into any blood glucose testing kit. With Diabetic Dabs, David’s daily testing process got easier, and his clothes stayed blood-free.
Liz believes that if she can relieve just one worry from the lives of diabetics or their parents, she’s succeeded.”
I was intrigued, so I happily accepted a sample to test out and TWO MORE TO GIVE AWAY! Let me tell you, for someone as OCD about wiping her blood as I am, these Dabs are a dream come true. They suck up those droplets like nobody’s business, leaving my clothes (and cat) blood stain free. They are generously sized to even handle those gushers. For a normal finger prick I find ripping off about a fourth of the sheet is very easy and absorbs perfectly - without leaving behind that pesky tissue shard fuzz. Each pad of Dabs comes with an adhesive backing so you can stick it right to your meter case (as shown below). I don’t use a conventional meter case but the pad of Dabs is sized perfectly to slip into my meter’s pouch.
I’m now a big fan of Diabetic Dabs, and was thrilled to hear that the company donates some of the proceeds to diabetes research:
“One thing we're very dedicated to is that we donate a part of all net profits from Diabetic Dabs back to diabetic research, specifically the American Diabetes Association. We love that it provides not only ourselves but our customers an avenue to be able to pour back into an organization dedicated to helping take care of a community we're an integral part of. “
So what do you say? Would you like to try out Diabetic Dabs for yourself? You can order them here, but I also have two boxes to give away! Each box contains four packets of Dabs, for a total of 200 absorbant little sheets per winner. To enter for your chance to win, just leave me a comment and tell me how you, or your loved one with diabetes, currently deals with those little droplets everywhere. I’ll close the contest at midnight EST tomorrow, Jan. 30th, and announce the two winners on Friday.
Today I’m so thrilled to be posting over at Lauren’s Hope as part of their Free Stuff Friday series. I’m talking about summer, and the challenges it can bring to dealing with diabetes.
“High temperatures can make my insulin spoil. Summer barbeques and cocktails are a challenge to my blood sugar management. Water from the pool or the ocean (or even my own sweat, eeewww) can be dangerous to my insulin pump. And vacation travel can really throw me off.”
To read the rest of what I had to say, head on over to the Lauren’s Hope blog. Actually, you should head over there even if you couldn’t care less about what I had to say. Because as I said, today is Free Stuff Friday and Lauren’s Hope is giving away THREE medical i.d.’s - one cuff, one stainless steel bracelet, and one necklace. That’s three chances to win, but you need to leave a comment on my guest post over at Lauren’s Hope blog to enter!
Thank you, Lauren’s Hope, for inviting me to guest post and for involving me in Free Stuff Fridays!
So I really feel like my blog has pretty much been one big yawn lately. That’s probably because I also feel like diabetes has been one big yawn lately. Luckily I have some excitement today because I get to pick the winner of the Extend giveaway! (The photo below is a stock photo Extend sent me. I can’t promise the prize will look like that.)
As always, I use a random number generator to pick a winner, and it picked . . . . . . .
Congratulations, Laura, I will email you to iron out the details!! And for those who didn’t win but plan to order some snacks, remember that discount code KARENG will save you 20% at the Extend on-line store.
After being diagnosed in 1979, when sugar was 100% off the table for people with diabetes, my mom always bought me snacks that were labeled “for diabetics”. They were full of artificial ingredients and didn’t taste very good, but at the time a mediocre cookie seemed better than no cookie at all. (Unless I snuck the "real" cookies, not that I ever did that. Much. *lying*) Anyway, today we have better insulin and carb counting and such, and I usually run screaming from anything labeled “diabetic friendly” because I assume they are laden with chemical substances. But when a representative from Extend emailed asking if I’d like to sample their products, I made an exception. And I did so because the Extend line was created by Dr. Francine Kaufman, past president of the ADA and chief medical officer at Medtronic. I’ve been lucky enough to meet Dr. Kaufman when I attended the Medtronic summits. I really respect Dr. Kaufman and I know she is an advocate for healthy food choices. According to Extend, the products are “clinically proven to help control blood sugar for up to 6-9 hours”.
I was interested in trying either the Crisps or the Drizzles, and they were kind enough to send me a sampling of both. The first ingredient in both products is soy, which I’m not a huge fan of so the first bite I had each time was kind of weird tasting to me. BUT only the first bite, then my taste buds adjusted and the snacks were quite tasty. My favorite was the White Cheddar Crisps. They kind of remind me of SmartFood, which I love! When I ate the snacks before bed I did find my CGM graph stayed level overnight with no pesky alarms. For me, the single serve packs work well too, because crispy snacks are a huge weakness of mine and I will tend to eat way more than one serving at at time. I also like that I can easily toss a bag in my purse for a snack on the go - the rest of my stash will be great for travel snacks as I head to Friends for Life next week.
Would you like to try Extend products for yourself? Well, Extend has offered a wonderful prize package to be given away to one of you! It includes:
Your choice of 5 bags of Extend Drizzles (Caramel Bliss and/or Chocolate Dream)
Your choice of 5 bags of Extend Crisps (Cinnamon, BBQ, Zesty Ranch, Italian Herb, White Cheddar, or Variety)
Your choice of 5 Extend Shake mixes (Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, or Variety)
And your choice of 15 Extend Bars (Chocolate, Peanut, Peanut Butter Chocolate, Apple Cinnamon, Mixed Berry, or Variety)
I’m going to make it really really easy to enter - just leave a comment on this post and you are in! Yay!! The contest will close at midnight tomorrow and I will announce the winner on Wednesday.
As part of the promotion, Extend has also offered a discount code that will save you 20% off your entire order with no minimum purchase. If you order more than $42 worth of products you’ll also get free shipping! Just use promo code KARENG at checkout to get your discount.
** Disclosure - I received this sample Extend products free of charge. The give-away and discount is also provided by Extend. As always, my opinions are my own. **
As promised, I’ve drawn the name of one person who made a Spare a Rose donation and left me a comment to be entered into the give-away. And the winner of a blue knitted something or other is . . . .
Congratulations, Sarah!!! Please email me so we can decide what you’d like me to knit for you!!
Thanks to everyone who played along with my little contest, and thanks to all who made Spare a Rose donations. Don’t forget, you can still make your own donation here, and help save a life!!
Today is a fun day, because I get to announce the winner of the Glooko contest I wrote about last week!! First I’d like to thank the generous Glooko team (especially Molly, who I’ve been emailing with) for allowing me to use the extra set of cables I received for a blog give-away.
So, as I always do with blog contests, I used a Random Number Generator to draw the winning entry. And the winner is . . . . . .
. . . . . .
. . . . . .
. . . . . .
Hallie from The Princess and The Pump!!!! Congratulations Hallie!! And thanks so much to everyone who entered the giveaway.
I used to be excellent at logging my blood sugars and food and all of that other stuff important to diabetes management. Used to be is the key phrase in that sentence. In the past few years I’ve fallen out of the logging habit. I can download all of my CGM info from my pump. And I am pretty good about always entering my blood sugar readings into my pump, so I can download that info as well. As for the food . . . . I just don’t log any of that anymore. But I’ve been using a new tool / app that may get me back to being a good logger.
You may have already heard of Glooko, a logging app for iPhone and iPod Touch. A while back I signed up to help beta test the Glooko IR Adaptor, which adds Accu-Chek to the list of meters compatible with the system. I downloaded the free Glooko app to my iPhone and my cables arrived in the mail. I’m currently using both Accu-Chek and OneTouch meters, and it was so easy to upload my blood sugar readings from all four of my meters into one logbook using Glooko. I simply plug the cable directly into my OneTouch meters, and use the Adaptor to transmit the data from the Accu-Cheks.
There is a pretty extensive food database in the Glooko app that I haven’t played around with too much yet, but it could get me back on the food logging wagon too!
Once you’ve got all of your info entered or downloaded, you can view the logbook on your phone or you can email logs to yourself, your doctor or anyone you choose.
If being better about logging is one of your diabetes goals, I think the Glooko system is an excellent tool to make this easier - both in the logging itself and the sharing of the information. My only wish, which I’ve shared with the Glooko team, is that there was some kind of graphing or charting included because for me, the visuals help me spot trends and problems more easily. However, the data can be emailed as a .csv file which can then be charted in Excel. (Not that I could figure out how to chart it, but my Excel-whiz engineer husband could probably do it for me.)
When I signed up to help test Glooko with my Accu-Chek meter, I was sent the cable and adaptor free of charge. I was not required to post about it, but I’m happy to share the information with you. I’m also happy to share the Glooko system with one of you!! I accidentally received two sets of cables and adaptors, and when I asked the Glooko team how I should go about returning the second set, they graciously told me to keep it for myself or give it away to a friend. So if you’d like to try Glooko out for yourself, leave a comment on this post with the words “Glooko Giveaway” and I will enter you to win the extra set! I’ll draw the winner next Monday and announce it here. Good luck!!
Congratulations Denise and Ms. Bean!!! I’ve already emailed you so we can get your prize coordinated!!
Okay, ready for some more fun? How about a Virtual Ice Cream Social? We all know PWDs can have ice cream. The article that stated giving a diabetic some ice cream was like giving an alcoholic just one beer seems to have been taken down. The so-called apology is still there, although it is also full of misinformation and most of the comments have been deleted. In any case, incorrect myths have been spread yet again, and it’s time to help raise awareness. Tonight Pete and I will be popping in to our local Old Fashioned Ice Cream Shoppe for sundaes. Because it’s absolutely okay to indulge on occasion. It doesn’t make my diabetes any worse and I’m not doing anything wrong. Won’t you join me in a scoop??
While dining with my local Fairfield County Diabetes Dinner group two weeks ago, the discussion rolled around medical ID’s - do we or don’t we wear them. We all agreed on the importance of wearing a medical ID, but not all of us actually do. Part of the problem seems to be that many medical IDs are just plain ugly. But they don’t have to be!! I told my Fld County Dinner friends to keep an eye on my blog for an upcoming give-away - and here it is!!
Jenna White, of Lauren’s Hope Medical ID Bracelets recently emailed me and offered to provide a bracelet to give away to one lucky blog reader. After hearing the story behind the company and seeing how pretty these ID bracelets are, I could hardly refuse!
Here is some information about Lauren’s Hope, directly from Jenna:
When you or your child was diagnosed with diabetes, your life instantly changed forever. As your doctor explained medical procedures, medications, and other lifestyle adjustments, you may have been overwhelmed thinking about all the things that would have to change. One thing that your condition shouldn't affect, though, is your individualized sense of style! In the past, medical bracelets have been big, bulky, impersonal and unattractive - which meant a lot of people would opt not to wear them.
That’s why Lauren’s Hope was founded - to create medical alert jewelry that people would actually want to wear. This inspiration for the business came from a family friend of the company’s founders. As a teenager with diabetes, Lauren refused to wear medical ID jewelry because it was “ugly” and could “draw attention” to her illness. Lauren’s mother asked for a fashionable medical ID to keep her daughter safe, and the rest is history.
Today, Lauren’s Hope is still dedicated to making beautiful medical ID jewelry for people of all ages, with any condition, and with any sense of style! Whether you have a style-savvy teenager with a penicillin allergy or you feel self-conscious wearing your own chunky diabetes ID to a dinner party, we can help you find a fashionable alternative that will keep you safe. People with diabetes, severe food, drug, and insect allergies, heart conditions, asthma, autism, a visual or hearing impairment, epilepsy, or any chronic illness need to wear medical alert jewelry with that information engraved, as well as people who are on certain medications or are gastric bypass, lap band or organ transplant patients.
In the event of an emergency, your medical ID will do more than just make you look good - it can also save your life! Your medical ID bracelet should be custom engraved with a few important details so medical personnel will know how to treat you best. They will need to know your name, your medical condition(s), any allergies and important medications that you have, and emergency contact numbers.
The winner of this contest will be able to chose from one of five bracelet choices. The prize includes one complete bracelet, including the tag, custom engraving and shipping. Your bracelet choices are: This is the Mood Bead medical ID bracelet. Don't like to keep your emotions all bottled up? Set them free with this psychedelic, color-changing mood bracelet! Featuring color changing mood beads surrounded by Swarovski crystals and sterling silver Bali beads, this medical ID bracelet will take you all the way back to the 70s. Attach your custom engraved medical ID tag to complete the look and show the world what you're feeling. The lobster clasps attach to your custom engraved medical ID tag. Slap on your medical ID bracelet and see what kind of mood you are in today! This is the Fiona medical ID bracelet. Everyone loves stylish simplicity - especially when it comes to medical ID jewelry. If you want a style that is elegant-yet-modest, you can't go wrong with this triple strand medical ID bracelet. This sophisticated design features black tubing and gray Swarovski crystals to create a look that is subtly stunning. Simply attach your custom engraved medical ID tag with our signature lobster clasps for instant, trouble-free elegance. This is the Multi Crystal medical ID bracelet. A simple yet fun combination of Swarovski crystals in pastel tones, sterling silver, and Bali beads makes this medical alert bracelet a must-have for any jewelry lover! This bracelet has it all: a little sparkle, a little shine, a lot of color and, as always, our signature lobster clasps that make it oh so easy to attach your custom engraved medical ID tag. If you need to wear a medical bracelet, you can still be fashionable! This is the Into the Dark medical ID bracelet. Are you a fan of glow in the dark beads? This unique medical ID bracelet features 2 lime green glowing beads. The sides of the bracelet feature black tubing and you can attach this medical ID bracelet to your custom engraved medical ID tag with lobster clasps. This is the Undercover medical ID bracelet. If you are confident and strong, with a bit of an edge, this stainless steel medical ID bracelet is perfect for you. The unique crisscross pattern and durable stainless steel are things you might not want to keep under wraps! This stylish bracelet can hold up to 3 lines of your important medical information. Combine safety with style when you snap on this medical ID bracelet.
If you’d like to enter the drawing, simply leave a comment on this post telling me if you wear medical ID a) always, b) often, c) on occasion or d) never. The winner will be drawn on Friday morning! Good luck!
I used an on-line random number generator to fairly draw a winner from the 29 entries I received. And the winning comment was:
lucky number six!! Which belongs to . . .
Congratulations Joanne! I've already sent you an email to work out the details! I hope you enjoy your gift basket, and thanks for being such a good blog-pal!
I’d also like to thank everyone who took the time to watch the Medicine Cabinet Makeover video and everyone who left a comment on my post. And a big thanks to Walgreens for this opportunity!
** Disclosure: For my participation in this project, I received $250 in gift cards from Walgreens. I was also given all of the products that Stacia displayed on my coffee table, as well as the gift basket mentioned in this post. I was asked to blog about my Medicine Cabinet Makeover experience, but all opinions I’ve expressed in this post are my own.
Back in March I was presented with a very cool opportunity, and I’m excited to be able to share it with you today!! Walgreens has put together a “Medicine Cabinet Makeover” series and I was asked to participate as someone who lives with and writes about diabetes. If I was game, a pharmacist would be sent to my house to evaluate and re-do my medicine cabinet - much like Stacy and Clinton do for people’s wardrobes on What Not To Wear. Needless to say, I jumped at the chance - not only to give my medicine cabinet a little overhaul, but also to help raise some awareness about just how many d-supplies we need to keep on hand just to stay healthy and live our lives! (I believe the Makeover Video will be shared on the Walgreens Facebook Page.)
A few days later a camera crew arrived, complete with lighting and microphones. (Yikes!!) Stacia, the pharmacist, was young and cool, which helped make me less nervous about the whole Medicine Cabinet Critique process. We ended up focusing more on the dresser drawer that holds my diabetes supplies than on my medicine cabinet, but Stacia perused them both. She quickly confirmed the claims I always make to you that I am very OCD extremely organized - but luckily she still had some great tips to give me!! She also left me with a bunch of diabetes supplies (and be sure to read all the way to the end of the post, because there may be some d-supplies for you too).
I’m so glad that Stacia warned me about closing the caps on my contact lens solutions, because it had never occurred to me that icky bathroom bacteria could travel into the bottles and then into my eyes!! Trust me, those lids are now snapped shut every night!
That little blood glucose meter Stacia pointed out is really cool and it’s the perfect size to tote along with me when I’m out for a run. (Okay, I haven’t been running much lately, but the meter is in my runner’s pack and ready to go when I am!!) The only thing that puzzled me a bit was the latex gloves - I’m not sure I know anyone who uses those while doing site changes or injections. (If you do, please let me know in the comments.) However, I can tell you those gloves are great for protecting your hands when you are dying yarn, so the knitter-side of me is making good use of them!!
I also want to mention a little piece that got edited out of the video. Stacia commented on the fact that I don’t have a lot of general medicines, like cold and flu meds, in my medicine cabinet. I explained that as a diabetic, I’m always very nervous about what over-the-counter meds I should or shouldn’t take. I generally wait until I get “real people sick” and then call my endo for his recommendations. Stacia pointed out that if I couldn’t get a hold of my endo when I needed to, I could simply pop into my local Walgreens and the pharmacist could help me. (Hence my little statement about that at the end of the video.)
Overall this was a terrific experience!! Stacia rocked and the camera crew was so patient when my nerves caused a few re-takes. The whole thing was a lot of fun. And to continue the fun, Walgreens has given me the opportunity to give away a gift-basket of supplies similar to the ones I received! If you’d like to win, just leave a comment on this post between now and 9am EST on Wednesday, July 20th. I’ll draw a winner at random and the basket will be sent to you! Good luck!

We’ve had lots of cold, rainy weather here last week and part of this week. As a result, I spent most of last weekend with a stuffy head, sore throat and aches - curled up on the couch in my jammies. And my favorite jammies when I’m feeling under the weather (and also when I’m feeling fine) are PJs for the Cure.
Yes, this is what I look like - even when I'm sick. NOT!
What are PJs for the Cure?
“Komar, the #1 sleepwear manufacturer in the country, launched PJs For The Cure in 2009 as a means to raise awareness and funds to support Juvenile Diabetes. PJs For The Cure was founded by Charles Komar, CEO of Komar, after his wife was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes). Komar has specially designed women’s and children’s pajama sets in an effort to raise $1 million to support the JDRF. What’s so great about PJs For The Cure is that 100% of all sales go directly to the JDRF.For more information about PJs For The Cure please visit www.pjsforthecure.org.”
The cause isn’t the only thing that is great about these jammies. My pair sports the WDD blue circle. They are snuggle soft and they even have a built in pump pocket! I love mine so much that I packed these pajamas when I went to BlogHer in August. You see, I knew my room-mate LeeAnn was packing hers too. We were matching jammie buddies, because we’re cool like that. (Okay, yes, I’m dorky. But LeeAnn is cool!)
I bet after I’ve gushed so much about these PJs, you’re wishing for a pair of your own or for your child, right? Well, I’m happy to tell you that I was contacted to host a give-away for one pair of PJs for the Cure. Simply leave a comment on this post between now and midnight on Tuesday. I’ll announce the winner on Wednesday. Good luck!
Who doesn't love a good cupcake? Okay, okay, maybe cupcakes are a bit scary this close to bathing suit season. But not to worry. These cupcakes won't expand your bottom or mess with your blood sugar. These are very special cupcakes!!
That's right. These are calorie-free carb-free (and I suppose gluten-free) CRAYON CUPCAKES!!!! Wonderful Cara sent these along to me last week. They arrived on a particularly bad day and really made me smile. I dare you to tell me they don't make you smile too!!
Would you like some cupcakes of your own? Well, you are in luck. Cara is giving away another box of these lovely cupcakes in a blog contest!! Get on over there and enter before she picks a winner on Friday!!
Thank you so much, Cara. You are a wonderful friend and were so sweet to think of me. You really did bring some brightness into a really really bad day!!
I'm a Knitter living with Type 1 Diabetes. I'm not a medical professional nor am I giving medical advice - I'm just a girl sharing my personal thoughts and experiences with diabetes. I live in New England with my wonderful husband and lots and lots of yarn.
